Get outside in honor of Earth Day

Working out in the gym or at home provides you with many great options for getting in shape and for meeting your fitness goals. In honor of Earth Day tomorrow, we will be looking at some ways that for you to get active in the great outdoors.

One of the best things about the Crossfit method of fitness is that a majority of their workouts can be done both in and outside of the gym. Using your own body, a yoga mat and a reliable park bench, you’re able to get a heart pumping workout in while filling your lungs with some of the finest fresh air mother nature has to offer. Here’s a suggested workout that can be done outdoors and that will pair perfectly with your MZ-3 to earn you a bucket full of MEPs:

Part 1 (4 Rounds)

10 Pushups

15 Sit ups

20 Squats

Part 2 (4 Rounds)

10 Burpees

20 Bench jumps

30 Pushups

40 Lunges

30 second plank

Unlike the steady-state fitness level of running on pavement or a treadmill, trail running requires more from both your aerobic and anaerobic systems. While trail running, your mind and body are keenly focused and engaged in every step. Finding your footing, balancing, thinking ahead, and adjusting to upward or downward incline changes intensifies your running experience and makes it a great outdoor workout. The textured terrain of trails makes your body work harder, you heart pump faster, and torches calories all at the same time. Plus, its a perfect Earth Day workout because you get to feel like an explorer and you get to take in more of mother nature’s beauty when you get out of the gym and off of the man made pavement.

We’ve talked a lot about HIIT on our blog in the past. Why? Because we love it! HIIT is a great workout method that is able to get your heart pumping and your body moving to get you big MEP numbers and great fitness results. HIIT often incorporates movements that require nothing but your body, which makes is a perfect option for getting fit outside. Here’s a quick HIIT interval that you can repeat as you like while observing the beauties of nature on Earth Day:

Try doing each of the following moves for 30 seconds straight with a short 15 second break in between each:

Plank

Squat

Wall sit

Jumping jacks

Bench step ups

Side planks

Lunges

Crunches

What better way is there to celebrate Earth Day than to cling to mother earth herself? Rock climbing presents you with the opportunity to take part in a full body workout while enjoying the company of friends and fresh air. Rock climbing takes core strength for stabilization while using your arms and legs to push and climb. Climbing helps to build both your muscle and endurance. You can tone, strengthen and work muscle groups that aren’t easily activated in other more traditional forms of exercise.

Some of your favorite outdoor sports may be the way that you can best celebrate Earth Day while earning MEPs at the same time. Outdoor sports are a great way to hang out with friends while staying moving and competing. Group sports give you the added motivation of performing in front of others which makes you push yourself and test your limits in the name of competition.
