Low Wood Health Club Case Study

Written by Myzone | Thursday, 11 January 2018

"Demand for group exercise classes has almost doubled since the Health Club at Low Wood Bay Resort & Spa started using Myzone six months ago," group leisure manager Michael Kay explains.

Tell us about the club.

Low Wood Bay Resort & Spa in Windermere is one of five hotels in and around Lancashire and the Lake District. It's operated by the family-run English Lakes Hotels Resorts & Venues. The Health Club caters to both hotel guests and local residents, and features the latest high tech equipment and leisure services. The health club was refurbished this year as part of a wider £16m redevelopment of the hotel to include a reconfigured 40-station gym, express spa treatment rooms, steam room, infrared sauna and modern male, female and family changing areas. It runs more than 40 classes per week, including pool classes and outdoor adventure activities like Nordic walking or paddle board sessions on the lake.

Why are you offering Myzone for free?

We introduced Myzone six months ago and installed screens in both the gym and exercise studio. We decided to offer it to all 650 of our members for free. We want it to be an integral part of our community and for all members to realize the benefits of Myzone. We’ve also introduced the technology to visitors so they can monitor their training. Currently, 65% of our members are actively using Myzone.

How do you engage members with Myzone challenges?

We run monthly challenges as well as class challenges, and they are always accompanied by valuable prizes. For example, our recent ‘Yellow is the New Gold‘ was all about challenging participants to work in their yellow zone to collect as many MEPS as possible over the month. The first, second and third prizes included wakeboarding lessons, meals out and personal training sessions.

How has Myzone impacted the business?

Attendance in our studio classes has increased by 48%, and in some cases we’ve had to double up the sessions to meet demand. 80% of class attendees now wear Myzone belts during the sessions and both members and instructors enjoy competing against one another.

Throughout the club, there’s much more interaction between the members who use Myzone and between our instructors and members. The club is much more vibrant and sociable as a result of Myzone.

How has Myzone helped with membership?

There are no other facilities in the area offering Myzone, so it has proved very helpful in attracting and retaining members – they like the uniqueness of the technology. In addition to significantly increasing class activity, Myzone is also encouraging members to be more active outside of the club (i.e. climbing the fells, cycling, open water swimming and even exercising on holiday).

Keep Moving Forward
