Breaking bias, barriers, and stereotypes in fitness.

Written by Anne Rees | Wednesday, 16 March 2022

In honour of International Women's Day and all things women empowerment throughout March, we are celebrating the fantastic work of one of our newest partners – Curves, a community of women empowering each other to improve their lives though exercise.

The theme of this year’s International Women’s Day is #BreakTheBias, which couldn’t be more apt as we move away from the outdated stereotypes like “women don’t sweat,” “women don’t strength train,” and “women only do cardio.” This is thanks to the work of groups such as Curves and their mission of strengthening women worldwide.

Breaking stereotypes

The idea of breaking bias is part of the fabric of Curves. Curves was the first Gym specially designed for women that focused on strength training and HITT-style workouts. As they move into their 30th year of strengthening women, they want to call out the biggest bias about their brand. Isn’t Curves the old ladies’ gym?

Embracing change is a key Curves value. The group is always looking for ways to incorporate the latest research and new technology into their programs to keep its members engaged and leading strong, healthy lives.

Myzone has been installed in more than 30 Curves facilities in US, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand as part of a new partnership. They will continue to install more locations during 2022. This places Curves facility owners at the forefront of digital fitness and gives coaches the most effective tools to help their members put in the effort that is needed to get the results they want.

Already, the Curves community is actively breaking down the stereotype that women and older generations are less likely to adopt technology. Members ranging from age 16 up to 86, are actively embracing the new heart rate tracker technology, and enjoying the gamification, motivation, and greater sense of connection. Proving that age is no barrier to heart rate technology.

“Curves has always been an excellent workout for ALL ages and fitness levels, and it’s still the workout that can give women everything they need, plus coaching and accountability. Curves is EVERY ladies’ gym an effective workout that gets results in just 30 minutes! If we are appealing to women over 45, that’s a compliment,” says Krishea Holloway, President.

As we celebrate International Women’s Day 2022, let’s hear it for all the female Myzone movers out there. Let’s give a big shout-out to women’s fitness experts in companies such as Curves, continuing to help women all over the world enjoy happier and healthier lives through physical activity.
