Study finds Myzone boosts effort and motivation
by Ben Hackney-Williams on Thursday, 21 December 2023
Research has found that Myzone and its tiles on screens have a positive influence on users’ perceptions of physical effort and motivation.
The study, entitled The influence of Myzone and the visual screen on gym members individual perceptions of physical effort and motivation when participating in high intensity fitness classes, was undertaking as part of a dissertation by Julia Stewart from the University of the Highlands and Islands.
The transformative impact of heart rate tech
In her comprehensive study, Julia unveils the transformative impact of the Myzone activity belt coupled with a visual screen in high-intensity fitness classes.
Her research, pivoting around the hypothesis that these tools positively influence perceptions of physical effort and motivation, reveals exciting possibilities for enhancing community health and wellbeing.

The paper explores how the Myzone heart rate monitor and screen visuals can turn your gym time from meh to yeah! Picture this: class members are sweating it out, with heart rates up on-screen alongside the rest of the participants, making every individual the star of their own fitness show. It’s the kind of workout that gets everyone moving in unison, sharing the experience and building bonds.
Embracing your heart rate makes training an exciting competition for the long game. It's like having a personal trainer on your wrist and a cheering squad on the screen.
Julia’s research says it loud and clear: “This tech boosts your effort and motivation.”
Healthy competition such as this is the difference-maker in a community, driving positive behaviour change for the future.
Tools that positively affect physical effort and motivation
For those googling 'fitness trends', 'best gym workouts', or 'heart rate training', Myzone is a golden ticket. It's not just about getting fit; it's about being part of a community that's growing together and sharing those sweaty high-fives.
This research concludes that activity belts such as the MZ-Switch or MZ-3 are more than just another fitness tracker. They can be a catalyst for change. Julia’s paper highlights Myzone’s ability to “positively affect physical effort and motivation.”

By displaying real-time data such as heart rate and effort levels, Myzone transforms a regular workout into an interactive, engaging experience.
Calling on reference points from other research papers, Julia calls on additional studies that further add depth to her own work, with examples such as:
“Frederick-Recascino et al., (Competition and intrinsic motivation in physical activity: a comparison of two groups, 2003) suggests that if participants feel the need to compete this will engage them further in the activity and individuals will be motivated take part more consistently.”
Help communities to push their limits
A unique feature of Myzone is its MEP system and status ranking. Julia’s study highlights how this creates a sense of competition and accountability. Gym members aren't just exercising; they're part of a dynamic, motivating ecosystem that encourages them to push their limits.
Julia suggests that this technology could be a key player in enhancing community health. By fostering a sense of collective motivation and competition, it can encourage more people to engage in regular physical activity, thus improving overall community health.
The dissertation is more than just a study, too; it's a roadmap for future research. While acknowledging limitations such as COVID-19 constraints, Julia opens doors for further exploring the long-term effects of such technologies on different demographics.
Harness heart rate technology for healthier communities
By integrating Myzone into fitness routines, you're not just improving an individual’s health; you're fostering a culture of wellness that resonates through communities, making the world a healthier, happier place. Julia's research is a beacon, guiding us towards this brighter, more active future.
Heart rate training is exciting, it's engaging, and it's all about making fitness fun. Let's raise our water bottles to a future where gyms are not only about grunts and the grind, but about grins en route to gains, with Myzone in your corner for the journey.
