Evie Waring: Hockey and Spartan World Championships with heart rate training
by Ben Hackney-Williams on Monday, 2 September 2024
Meet member of Team Myzone, Evie Waring. From a young age, Evie’s fitness journey began with hockey and then obstacle course racing.
She’s since been smashing goals through functional fitness and sport, alongside her studying. Below, find out more about her achievements through hard work and heart rate training, including competing in the Spartan World Championships, and how she’s all about the process; not just the end results.
What first got you into health and fitness?
I've always played hockey from the age of four, but I started obstacle course racing at the age of 13, and then that just kind of took off, and we've delved into, like, functional fitness and then just stuff like that. Yeah, the most of now normal workout week, and now it's a lot more functional fitness and hockey.
I'm playing hockey four times a week, and then that's accompanied by gym sessions and all sorts of strength and conditioning. Oh, and I do enjoy a functional fitness class, along with a bit of running now ever since I completed my first marathon.
More than just motivation to keep going
I've already got the motivation for physical activity, because I enjoy it, but it's definitely knowing when to pull back and when to push on with your goals.
There have been a couple of times I've been injured, and it's knowing that you need to let yourself recover and then build back up, rather than just be like pushing through the injury, because it just makes it worse.
Worth it all for the feeling after a fitness class
Sometimes, when you're doing a class, it does hurt in the gym or in competitions, but then the feeling afterwards is a lot better. It’s all the endorphins and everything.
Thinking about effort – pushing into the heart rate zones and always making sure you're putting 100% in – you’re doing it for yourself. It’s your max effort and not anyone else's.
How has Myzone helped you in your fitness journey?
I'd say it's helped me to stay on track. Like, I know that when I'm in a monthly challenge and I see that another team's beating us, I want to get those points!
Having the competitive side of it, as well as being able to stay connected with friends is important.

But if one of my friends has done a workout, then that makes me want to go and do a workout to try and beat their score. It’s all healthy competition.
What's been your greatest achievement in fitness?
Oh, I've been quite lucky to do a lot of things at a young age. Like I mentioned the marathon, but I don't think that's my greatest achievement. I'd probably say competing at Lake Tahoe near San Francisco for the Spartan World Championships. That was my greatest achievement, because I enjoyed it so much.
What advice would you give somebody just starting out on their fitness journey?
I'd probably say, just enjoy it! I mean, if you've got goals, go for it, but don't forget that, it's the process that you're supposed to enjoy, not just the end result.
